Health status and quality of life in patients with diabetes in Switzerland

Abstract: Aims: We aimed to assess the health status and quality of life (QoL) of patients with diabetes and explore the associated factors in a French-speaking region of Switzerland. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed self-reported data from 585 patients with diabetes. We ran univariate and multivariate regressions analyses on health status (Physical and Mental Component Summary scores (PCS, MCS) of the SF-12) and diabetes-specific QoL (ADDQoL score). Results: Mean PCS was 43.1 ±10.4 and mean MCS was 46.7 ±11.1… Show more

“…Our results are consistent with the study of HRQoL in other cohorts with chronic diseases 17–19. We observed similar associations between income and mental and physical components of the SF-12 as that identified in cohorts with diabetes or a history of stroke 20 21…”

“…However, the AFEQT provides information regarding AF-specific HRQoL measures, and we observed a graded relation such that decreased income was associated with lower HRQoL as quantified with AF-specific measures. We additionally note that the magnitude of changes in SF-12 components was similar in our study as that observed in cohorts with diabetes or a history of stroke 20 21…”

“…In the present study, women are characterised in all three SF-12 indices by having lower scores than men. The relationship between female sex and diminished HRQoL was confirmed by numerous authors [2,22,23,28,34] and opposing studies are scarce [27]. Some population-based studies have shown that people with diabetes have a lower educational level and lower-income than other patients [35,36].…”

“…The shortest version (SF-12) proved to give virtually identical summary scores (PCS, MCS) as SF-36 [21]. SF-12 was successfully used in population-based studies and cross-sectional studies of diabetes [22,23,24,25,26,27,28].…”
