Health status and fertility intentions among migrants

Abstract: The role of health has never entered the debate about migrant fertility. The main goal of this work was to explore, for the first time, the relationship between health and fertility intentions among migrants by gender, duration of stay and parity. Three health measures were considered: self‐rated health, the presence of chronic illnesses and mental health. “…For health status, two measures were used to reflect the self-rated and objective health of women: a dummy variable coded as 1 if the respondent reported her health status in good condition, and a dummy variable coded as 1 if the respondent reported having ever been hospitalized due to injury or illness. Both self-rated and objective measures have been found to be strong predictors of fertility intentions ( 29 ).…”

“…FIs of foreign women partnered to Italian men will resemble those of foreign women partnered to foreign men if socialization holds; or, instead, will resemble those of Italian women partnered to Italian men, finding support for adaptation. Finally, as migrants' fertility is shaped by different norms or migratory projects (Impicciatore et al, 2020;Mussino et al, 2021;Alderotti and Trappolini, 2021;Carella et al, 2021;García-Pereiro and Paterno, 2022), we also hypothesize changes on the explanatory levels of Socialization vs Adaptation to FIs across different migrant origins of women partnered to Italian men.…”

“…The fertility of immigrants will depend on their age, sex, and family status when they migrated, and whether they move as part of a family unit, for family reunification, or as individuals. Usually, after one or two generations, the fertility behaviour of immigrants tends to converge to that of the native-born, as descendants of immigrants adopt the behaviour and attitudes of the new society (Alderotti & Trapplini, 2021). However, this does not always happen or may occur slowly, particularly if the immigrant community is isolated from the rest of the population.…”
