Health, Security and Participation: A Structural Relationship Modeling among the Three Pillars of Active Ageing in China

Abstract: This paper explores and tests the impact of health and security on the participation of Chinese older people using data from the China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey (CLASS) in 2014. Based on the framework of Active Ageing, the exogenous latent variables “health” and “security” are assumed to directly affect the endogenous latent variable “participation”, and indirectly affect it via mediating the function of “willingness”. The estimation results of the structural equation model show that health has a signi… Show more

“…The larger number of indicators available in the SHARE survey matches the areas of greatest scientific development within AA, namely Health and Participation, with a lower presence of questions related to the Lifelong Learning and Security pillars, despite their proven relevance in positive ageing trajectories [ 14 , 103 , 137 ].…”

“…An optimal combination of the Health, Lifelong Learning, Participation and Security pillars will be key to achieving AA. Most authors hold this assumption and there have been attempts to build it into empirical models [101][102][103], yet few have succeeded in showing the interdependence between some pillars and others to show profiles of older adults ageing along diverse trajectories. This paper has demonstrated the interdependence of the pillars, giving five main profiles, which in turn were related to personal and contextual factors as well as to measures of well-being and quality of life.…”

“…We analyze the relationships among the variables with the help of SEM in the statistical analysis software Mplus 8.0, and the maximum likelihood estimation method (ML) is used due to its robust estimation even if the measured indicators do not obey normal distribution under the premise of large samples [ 44 ]. On the measurement models, the coefficients of all measurement indicators explaining the latent variables are significant at the 1% level, indicating that the indicators measured the latent variables better.…”

“…It is mainly due to two reasons, one is that urban women have better social security resources, they can get access to better social security services and benefits (54). In addition, the three-child policy is currently being advocated in China (55), due to China's strong traditional intergenerational ties and the inadequacy of the current childcare system (56, 57), more and more women prefer to retire to care for their grandchildren to reduce the pressure on their children (58,59). In the absence of social support, many women are physically and psychologically exhausted by family (60).…”
