Health-Related Quality of Life of the General German Population in 2015: Results from the EQ-5D-5L

Abstract: The EQ-5D-5L is a widely used generic instrument to measure health-related quality of life. This study evaluates health perception in a representative sample of the general German population from 2015. To compare results over time, a component analysis technique was used that separates changes in the description and valuation of health states. The whole sample and also subgroups, stratified by sociodemographic parameters as well as disease affliction, were analyzed. In total, 2040 questionnaires (48.4% male, m… Show more

“…Prevention of PCO is clinically important and beneficial to patients as this condition is associated with reduced visual performance, which is a significant morbidity in the elderly age group that this study analysed [ 32 ]. Poor vision is associated with depression, falls and reduced mobility in this age cohort [ 33 , 34 ]. Furthermore, the reduction in the requirement of Nd:YAG capsulotomy to correct PCO can reduce healthcare costs and associated clinical risks [ 3 , 35 ] The prevention of PCO and subsequent Nd:YAG capsulotomies could reduce the burden on the healthcare system concerning the healthcare resource use required for diagnosis, the procedure itself as well as any post-procedural monitoring, complications and any further treatments.…”

“…From 2012 to 2014, the surveys produced 6074 respondents; the methods and results have been presented in detail elsewhere [26]. The 2015 survey was conducted in the same way, adding another 2040 respondents and generally stable baseline results; for detail, see the study by Huber et al [27]. EQ-5D-5L data from all four surveys were pooled for this study.…”

“…The second questionnaire is the EQ-5D-5L, a generic instrument consisting of five items addressing mobility, self-care, usual activity, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression and a visual analogue scale to assess general health 44. Psychometric properties of the German EQ-5D have been evaluated across diseases and populations 45–48. The main advantage of the EQ-5D-5L is the availability of utility scores which enable the calculation of quality-adjusted life-years and the incorporation in health-economic analyses 49…”
