Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Different Diseases Measured With the EQ-5D-5L: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Background: The EQ-5D-5L is a generic preference-based questionnaire developed by the EuroQol Group to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 2005. Since its development, it has been increasingly applied in populations with various diseases and has been found to have good reliability and sensitivity. This study aimed to summarize the health utility elicited from EQ-5D-5L for patients with different diseases in cross-sectional studies worldwide. Methods: Web of Science, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochra… Show more

“…In addition, this review highlights that, while many instruments could be used to evaluate HRQoL, a vast majority of these instruments are generic. The EQ-5D questionnaire, for instance, is said to be one of the most prevalent ways to measure HRQoL worldwide ( Zhou et al, 2021 ). However, it could be argued that these generic measurement tools are limited to a certain number of health dimensions and may therefore miss important aspects of QoL to the profit of general health status regardless of disease’s specificities ( Mossman et al, 2016 ; Efthymiadou et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The European Quality‐of‐Life 5‐Dimension 5‐Level (EQ‐5D‐5L) is a generic measure of HRQL; it is a widely used questionnaire in different diseases and in PLWH. [ 18 ] The questionnaire consists of five different dimensions, an overall value (utility index [UI] value), and the visual analog scale (VAS) to assess the patient’s current health state. [ 16 ] A perception of poor health may negatively influence self‐care and adherence to treatment, and in this context an HRQL assessment may predict survival in PLWH.…”

“…The median health utility value of the patients with chronic pain reported in this study (0.669) is lower than that of the general Malaysian population (median: 1.0; IQR: 0.925, 1.075) [ 21 ], suggesting that chronic pain negatively affects quality of life. Furthermore, it is noted that chronic pain affected HRQoL to a greater extent as compared with other diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pneumonia disease, human immunodeficiency virus infection, chronic kidney disease and neoplasm [ 28 ]. This could be due to the various consequences of chronic pain, which compromise not only one’s physical function but also social life [ 10 ].…”
