Results: Mean scores on the HADS and DAS24 were within normal range, but a considerable proportion of participants were experiencing significant levels of distress. Psychosocial adjustment was unrelated to most clinical and demographic variables, but was associated with a series of cognitive processes. Permanent repository linkConclusions: Psychological variables, rather than clinical or demographic factors, are associated with how a patient adjusts to wearing an ocular prosthesis. Such factors might be amenable to change through psychosocial intervention.

Objective: To study the quality of life of Chinese pediatric patients with retinoblastoma (RB) after enucleation and the influencing factors.Methods: A questionnaire survey was performed on 71 cases of pediatric patients with RB after enucleation and 80 cases of healthy children, using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic Core Scales (PedsQL TM 4.0). Results:The social dimension scores, school dimension scores, and total scores for the PedsQL TM 4.0 among the pediatric patients with RB were statistically significantly lower than those of healthy children. The influencing factors were unilateral/bilateral affected eyes, diagnosis age, and ocular prosthesis satisfaction. Conclusion:Early discovery, timely treatment, increased eye salvage rate, and cosmetic effects of ocular prosthesis were key factors for increasing the quality of life of pediatric patients with RB.Attention should be paid to the health, social, and school development of pediatric patients with RB.

Anophthalmia is the absence of an eye. This may be unilateral or bilateral and its prevalence is low. It results from developmental arrest of the globe during organogenesis. Three patients aged 22, 23 and 25, sisters, have congenital unilateral right-sided, bilateral and unilateral left-sided anophthalmia respectively. The only family history element is that their paternal great-grandfather also suffered from congenital unilateral right-sided anophthalmia. They were sent from the Regional Clinical Hospital to the Clinic of Trauma and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Universidad de Concepción to be treated from their first months of life. The treatment included the use of sequential conformers to expand the eye sockets, and then individual ocular prostheses were prepared and installed. The rehabilitation of congenital anophthalmia is a major challenge. Early intervention, as was the case with these patients, makes a significant difference on the overall development of the patient and on the emotional well-being of the family.
