Health-related quality of life and functional status in end-stage COPD: a longitudinal study

Abstract: Since there is still a dearth of information about the end stage of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the main aim of this study was to examine the development of healthrelated quality of life (HRQoL) and functional status over time in COPD patients in Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage IV.82 Dutch COPD patients completed the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) for HRQoL and the Groningen Activities for Daily Living Restriction Scale (GARS) for functional s… Show more

“…These data demonstrate that both functional capacity -maximum potential to develop an activity -and performance -daily activities performed -are able to reflect the impact that the impairment of activities of daily living has on the quality of life of patients with COPD. the most functionally impaired had greater impact on quality of life, especially in the domains 'activities' (25). Whereas the removal of an activity in daily life depends on the need and/or convenience and on the intensity of symptoms associated with it (5), these findings suggest that the functional status exerts greater impact on quality of life of patients in more advanced stages of the disease.…”

“…Most of these studies focused on HRQL changes of hospitalized patients (e.g. during acute exacerbations [33,34]), newly detected COPD cases [35], patients in the end-stage setting [15] or observed HRQL changes after pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions [13,14]. In general, weak associations between changes in lung function and HRQL developments were found [36,37].…”
