Health‐related quality of life after bladder preservation therapy for muscle invasive bladder cancer

Abstract: Objective: To assess health-related quality of life (QOL) of bladder cancer patients following bladder preservation therapy (BPT). Methods: Eighty patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer had been treated between January 1992 and July 2005 at our institutions with BPT consisting of transurethral resection, intra-arterial chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Among them, 48 were alive and free from recurrence at the time of survey and were asked to participate. A total of 168 patients who had been treated for supe… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the present analyses showed satisfactory results in terms of the maximum voided volume and post-void residual urine volume after treatment (median of 350 and 25 mL, respectively). The favourable SF-36 scores in this study suggest that patients maintained a high QoL after treatment with our selective tetramodal bladder-sparing therapy, which is consistent with the results of previous studies [8,[29][30][31].…”

“…[95][96][97] Healthrelated QoL of bladder-preserved MIBC patients treated with CRT was not significantly different from that of NMIBC patients treated conservatively. 98 In MIBC patients treated with PC after induction CRT, bladder capacity was transiently reduced to approximately 100 mL just after PC, but typically recovered to >300 mL within 6 months. A median IPSS of 33 patients treated with PC was 5, which is comparable with that of age-matched Japanese men.…”

“…EPIC has been used to asses the impact of aging on domain-specific HRQOL 15, satisfaction and regret with prostatectomy 16, erectile dysfunction in patient treated with external beam radiation 17 and HRQOL among patients treated with bladder preservation therapy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer 18. Having been successfully used in the field by several investigative teams suggests the EPIC has robust construct validity.…”
