Health-related quality of life after solid organ transplantation: the role of sport activity

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of sport activity on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of solid organ transplant recipients participating in sports competitions. A group of 168 sportive transplanted patients (STP), a group of 97 nonsportive transplanted patients (NSTP), and a group of 152 sportive healthy controls (SHC) were compared on the eight scales of the SF-36 questionnaire. STP and NSTP reported significantly lower scores than SHC on the physical functioning scale. STP did not d… Show more

“…The results showed that regular physical activity can significantly improve several SF-36 domains, such as General Health and Role—Emotional. Furthermore, they indicate that the benefits of sports activity go beyond the predictable impact on physical health to involve the psychological and social components of QoL [ 64 ]. Remarkably, many positive feedbacks can be already detected in the early stages of the interventions, and with a minimal amount of exercise load, in every age group.…”

“…These patients are also characterized by a subjective perception of personal physical, psychological, and emotional needs comparable to the population of healthy subjects, allowing them to achieve a level of quality of life similar to the general population of active individuals. 12 , 13 In these transplant recipients, this 130-km cycling race induces physiological modifications of kidney function, urinalysis, and complete blood count, similar to that observed in healthy amateur cyclists with a return to baseline values in the recovery period after the end of the competition. Furthermore, all the investigated parameters had a similar trend both in transplanted and healthy subjects, despite some differences related to the baseline clinical conditions.…”

“…When they looked at solid organ transplant recipients who participated in sports competitions, they found that they scored similarly to healthy sport‐playing controls on QOL scores regarding Physical Role, General Health, and Vitality. Non‐sportive transplant recipients scored significantly lower 63 . On the pediatric side, decreased physical fitness level and increased BMI have also been found to be associated with decreased QOL in kidney transplant recipients 64 .…”
