How can individuals’ responses to the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic be used to inform constructive responses for climate action? We present an exploratory, mixed-methods investigation ( N = 1784 US adults) into similarities and differences in individuals’ reactions to COVID-19 and climate change in June 2020. Participants identified many similarities between the issues, indicating that both are harmful to public health, politically polarizing, have global impacts, and have solutions. Participants also perceived many differences between the two threats: many perceived COVID-19 as medical, natural, and on a shorter timescale, while many perceived climate change as environmental, human caused, and on a longer timescale. Emotional reactions to each topic predict topic-relevant behaviors, but more strongly, and with a broader range of emotional reactions, for climate change than COVID-19. Open-ended responses show that hope was elicited for both issues in response to contemplating taking collective and individual actions, and despair was elicited for both issues in response to perceiving that others do not take the issues seriously. Finally, participants perceived that they were engaging in relatively more COVID-19 mitigation behaviors and some climate change mitigation behaviors than others (i.e., the “better-than-average” effect). Many participants believed others were relatively unconcerned about both threats because of the invisibility of the threats, ignorance, and elite cues (e.g., then-President Trump downplaying the threat). Einleitung: Die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die Gesundheit und die Notwendigkeit, die Treibhausgasemissionen des Gesundheitswesens zu reduzieren, werden zunehmend thematisiert. Über die Haltung ambulant tätiger Ärztinnen und Ärzte zum Klimaschutz in Praxen ist bisher wenig bekannt. Methodik: Zwischen Oktober 2020 und Februar 2021 wurden ambulant tätige Ärztinnen und Ärzte zu einer deutschlandweiten Online-Umfrage eingeladen. 1683 Teilnehmende beantworteten 39 Fragen zu den Bereichen Energie, Mobilität, Gebrauchsmaterialien, Finanzen und Patient*innenberatung. Dabei wurden Daten zu Ist-Zustand, Bereitschaft, Hürden und Wünschen hinsichtlich Klimaschutz in Praxen erhoben. Ergebnisse: 83% der Teilnehmenden sahen den Klimawandel als dringendes Problem, das sofortiges Handeln erfordere. Eine Mehrheit berichtete von klimawandelbedingten Folgen für die Gesundheit ihrer Patient*innen. Für Klimaschutz in ihren Praxen fühlten sich die meisten zuständig. Die Teilnehmenden zeigten große Bereitschaft zur Umsetzung klimafreundlicher Maßnahmen. Als Hindernisse wurden fehlende Information und Unterstützung durch Berufsverbände sowie finanzielle Mehrausgaben genannt. Der Großteil forderte die Entwicklung von klimafreundlichen Strategien durch Politik und Institutionen. Schlussfolgerung: Angesichts nationaler Klimaziele und Bereitschaft ambulant tätiger Ärztinnen und Ärzte zu Klimaschutz in Praxen ist berufspolitische Unterstützung z.B. durch Handlungsempfehlungen und finanzielle Förderungen zur klimafreundlichen Transformation des Gesundheitswesens im Einklang mit Planetary Health nötig. Für die Entwicklung effektiver Maßnahmen zur Einsparung von Treibhausgasemissionen in Arztpraxen sollten begleitende Studien zusätzliche Evidenz schaffen.

Consideration towards sustainability is typically quite forward-thinking, with prospective concern about resource availability for a much later point in time. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, though, brought critical care sustainability issues anticipated for the future, straight into the present. Critical care units are currently facing pandemic pressures and are not just looking ahead to question how they will resource their departments next month, year, or decades to come, but are also dealing with how to sufficiently manage each hour, shift, and day. 2 The sustainability of both an individual critical care unit, and the speciality as a whole, is no longer just a future concern, but an urgent, global crisis in the here and now. 3
