Health Measures Correlates in a French Elderly Community Population: The Paquid Study

Abstract: PAQUID is an epidemiologic prospective study of mental and functional aging. A sample of 4,050 community-dwelling individuals, aged 65 and over, was randomly selected from electoral lists of 37 parishes of Gironde after stratification by age, sex, and size of urban unit; 68.9 percent agreed to participate. Baseline information was obtained from a one-hour home interview. Health measures included ADL, IADL, mobility, Rosow scale, and two subjective health assessments. “…All individuals were screened with the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), [27]), Lawton's Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL, [28]) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD, [29]). In addition, extensive neuropsychological testing was performed, including attention (Code, [30], Trail Making Test A, [31]), working memory (verbal: Digit Span Forward [32], visuo-spatial: Corsi Block Tapping [33]), episodic memory (verbal: Buschke Double Memory 48 items [34], visual: Shapes test [35]), executive functions (Trail Making Test B [36], verbal fluency [37], Wisconsin card sorting [38]), language (Boston Naming, [39]), visual gnosis (Ghent Overlapping Figures, [40]) and praxis (ideomotor, reflexive and constructional [41]).…”

“…Three criteria had to be met for subjects to be included in the study: (i) to be at least 65 years of age on December 31, 1987; (ii) to live at home at the time of the initial data collection; and (iii) to be included on the communal (local) electoral lists. The general methodology of PAQUID has been described elsewhere (29). In brief, in 1988, all subjects were interviewed for one and one-half hours at home by a trained psychologist.…”

“…In this work, referring to the first strategy, we measured the baseline DHEA(S) levels in the serum of individuals more than 65 years of age, studied for Ϸ5 years in the PAQUID** program, a longitudinal community-based study of the elderly (29) designed to investigate possible correlations with functional, psychological, and mental status, and therefore to see if the results are consistent with the preliminary reported effects of replacement doses of administered DHEA. Furthermore, after 2-and 4-year follow-ups, we could also assess incident dementia and mortality.…”

“…For inclusion in the study, the subjects had to meet three criteria: to be registered on the local electoral lists, to be at least 65 years of age on December 31, 1987, and to be living at home. The general Paquid methodology has been described elsewhere [34]. Briefly, in 1988, all the subjects underwent a 90-min interview at home by a trained psychologist.…”
