Health literacy screening of patients attending a student-led osteopathy clinic: A pilot investigation

Abstract: Adequate levels of health literacy (HL) are required for patients to access appropriate health services and develop an understanding of the options for managing their healthcare needs. There is limited literature on HL of patients seeking care for a musculoskeletal complaint. The present study sought to screen the HL of patients presenting to an Australian osteopathy student-led clinic using a single screening question 'Are you confident completing medical forms?'. Less than 10% of patients attending the clini… Show more

“…However, this may be a product of clinic location (central business district) where the majority of patients attended, and the clinic being located at a university. Higher levels of education have been associated with higher health literacy and potentially an awareness of the role of osteopathy in the health system [8].…”

“…The health information questionnaire was developed for our clinical environment to capture data on a range of health behaviours and social determinants of health consistent with Australian public health surveys [2,22]. This health questionnaire included items such as physical activity level, serves of fruit and vegetables eaten per day, a life satisfaction screening question [23] and four single health literacy screening items [24,25]. Patients were also asked to identify if they were currently suffering, and/or previously suffered, from one or more of the major chronic diseases affecting the Australian population [3].…”

“…A systematic review by Loke et al [6] suggests between 7 and 42% of those with chronic musculoskeletal complaints demonstrate low health literacy, with estimates varying depending upon the population, and type of measure utilised [7]. Vaughan et al [8] evaluated the HL of patient’s attending an osteopathy, on-campus student-led clinic using a single item screening question, which identified 10% of patients attending this clinic had below adequate HL. Those patients who did not speak English at home, those with lower education levels, and those who were less satisfied with their life demonstrated lower levels of HL.…”
