OBJECTIVES Patient‐Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures can monitor patients with chronic illnesses outside of healthcare settings. Unfortunately, few applications that collect electronic PROMIS measures are designed using inclusive design principles that ensure wide accessibility and usability, thus limiting use by older adults with chronic illnesses. Our aim was to establish the feasibility of using an inclusively designed mobile application tailored to older adults to report PROMIS measures by examining (1) PROMIS scores collected with the application, (2) patient‐reported usability of the application, and (3) differences in usability by age. DESIGN Cross‐sectional feasibility study. SETTING Inpatient and outpatient cardiac units at an urban academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS A total of 168 English‐ and Spanish‐speaking older adults with heart failure. INTERVENTION Participants used an inclusively designed mobile application to self‐report PROMIS measures. MEASUREMENTS Eleven PROMIS Short‐Form questionnaires (Anxiety, Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities, Applied Cognition‐Abilities, Depression, Emotional Distress‐Anger, Fatigue, Global Mental Health, Global Physical Health; Pain Interference, Physical Function, Sleep Disturbance), and a validated health technology usability survey measuring Perceived Ease‐of‐Use and Usefulness of the application. RESULTS Overall, 27% of participants were between 65 and 74 years of age, 10% were 75 years or older, 63% were male, 32% were white, and 96% had two or more medical conditions. There was no missing PROMIS data, and mean PROMIS scores showed the greatest burden of pain, fatigue, and physical function in the sample. Usability scores were high and not associated with age (Perceived Ease‐of‐Use P = .77; Perceived Usefulness P = .91). CONCLUSION It is feasible for older adults to use an inclusively designed application to report complete PROMIS data with high perceived usability. To ensure data completeness and the opportunity to study multiple domains of physical, mental, and social health, future work should use inclusive design principles for applications collecting PROMIS measures among older adults. Aim: This brief report provides an overview of the development and structure of the Health App Review Tool. Methods: The Health App Review Tool has been designed to assess smart phone health apps according to their compatibility to individuals within the Alzheimer’s disease community. Specifically, app features and functions are characterized according to their appropriateness to the needs, abilities, and preferences of potential users. The Health App Review Tool is comprised of two components, the App and User Assessment; each component includes four complementary domains. Items in these domains can be compared between App and User assessments using a scoring key that will produce a match score. The score indicates the level of appropriateness in reference to the app’s ability to meet the user’s needs. Discussion: The Health App Review Tool was designed using available evidence and stakeholder preference data to ensure a user-centered design. The result was the development of a tool built on evidence and informed by the perceptions and preferences of those within and working with the Alzheimer’s disease population. App and User domains include usefulness, complexity, accessibility, and external variables. This unique matching approach is anticipated to significantly impact individualized, client-centered care. We anticipate that this study will serve as a model for future development of technology matching tools for other diagnostic populations. ResumenLa evaluación de la usabilidad del software es importante en el desarrollo de sistemas informáticos porque revela problemas de diseño e interactividad. El software del voto electrónico presencial propone grandes retos de usabilidad debido a que automatiza tareas tales como: comprobación de la identidad del elector, emisión del voto, escrutinio, emisión de reportes de resultados, transmisión y presentación de resultados. Considerando la existencia de métodos de usabilidad que están enfocados a distintos ámbitos específicos o siendo algunos muy generales surge la necesidad de plantear un método adaptado al software de voto electrónico presencial que permita detectar deficiencias en usabilidad. En este trabajo se desarrolló un método para evaluar la usabilidad del sistema del voto electrónico presencial denominado UsabVEP, este se aplicó en el software del proceso electoral de un distrito de Lima, se analizaron los resultados, se validó y se propuso mejoras al sistema. El método plantea dos fases: 1. Evaluación Heurística y 2. Evaluación con usuarios. Los resultados muestran que el método desarrollado encontró un 46% más de problemas de usabilidad respecto al método de Jakob Nielsen, tomado como referente, para el software del voto electrónico presencial en el Perú.Palabras clave: Evaluación con usuarios; Evaluación heurística; Método de evaluación; Usabilidad; Voto electrónico. AbstractThe evaluation of software usability have an important role in the development of computer systems, because it reveals design and interactivity problems. The electronic voting software proposes great usability challenges because it automates task such as: verification of the identity of the voter, voting, scrutiny, results reports, transmission and presentation of results. Considering the existence of usability methods that are focused on different specific areas or being some very general, the need arises to propose a method adapted to the electronic voting software that allows to detect deficiencies in usability. In this work a method was developed to evaluate the usability of the electronic voting system called UsabVEP, this was applied in the electoral process software of a district of Lima, the results were analyzed, the system was validated and improvements were proposed. The method proposes two phases: 1. Heuristic evaluation and 2. Evaluation with users. The results show that the method developed found 46% more usability problems compared to the method of Jakob Nielsen, taken as a reference, for the electronic voting software in Peru.
