Health Implications of Virtual Architecture: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of the Transferability of Findings from Neuroarchitecture

Abstract: Virtual architecture has been increasingly relied on to evaluate the health impacts of physical architecture. In this health research, exposure to virtual architecture has been used as a proxy for exposure to physical architecture. Despite the growing body of research on the health implications of physical architecture, there is a paucity of research examining the long-term health impacts of prolonged exposure to virtual architecture. In response, this paper considers: what can proxy studies, which use virtual… Show more

“…Fifth, the reviewed studies focus only on acute, short term physiological responses and did not consider the long term impacts of exposure to stress inducing architectural forms. However, a recent article has hypothesized that chronic exposure to stress inducing architectural forms may result in allostatic overloading (Valentine, 2023b). Allostatic overloading refers to the chronic or repeated exposure to stress-inducing events which may overwhelm the body's regulatory system, resulting in damage to organs and tissues (Mariotti, 2015).…”

“…Allostatic overloading refers to the chronic or repeated exposure to stress-inducing events which may overwhelm the body's regulatory system, resulting in damage to organs and tissues (Mariotti, 2015). As Valentine (2023b) highlights, future research examining the impact of architectural form on physiological stress responses will need to integrate additional clinical biomarkers, as well as clinimetrics, in order to fully capture the effects of architectural form on human physiology.…”

“…Future explorations will include the opportunity to probe virtual immersive environments, something that has already been done [37], also combined with electroencephalog-raphy [38]-but this time to test architectural spaces for potential health impacts, in a way that produces findings which can then be directly applied to the real world. The understanding is slowly emerging [39] that, beyond the current understanding of merely providing sanitary living conditions, architectural and urban design should be seen as a public health issue in a much broader sense.…”
