Health impacts of construction noise on workers: A quantitative assessment model based on exposure measurement

Abstract: 10To provide industry practitioners with a better understanding of the health 11 impacts of occupational noise generated during construction activities, this paper 12 applies measurement schemes to collect noise exposure samples of workers employed 13 in 10 different trades and develops a health damage assessment model to quantify 14 noise exposure level into hearing impairments suffered by field workers in units of 15 "USD". On-site measurements were conducted at two representative ongoing building 16 project… Show more

“…Noise exposure during night can lead to serious health effects on longterm, such as behavioural problems and cardio vascular effects (Bluyssen, Aries, and van Dommelen 2011). Moreover, it may affect the occupants' hearing abilities, increased systolic blood pressure and chronic headaches (Ismaila and Odusote 2014;Khaiwal et al 2016;Li et al 2016). Wong et al (2009) studied the relationship between human health and environmental quality through investigating the prevalence of SBS among 748 households and their evaluation of IEQ in Hong Kong.…”

“…Finally, this study provides evidence that construction noise has far reaching impacts on the general population that go beyond those experienced by workers in occupational settings. “…Noise not only causes hearing damage, but also leads to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other diseases [71]. More seriously, noise distracts workers, and this can lead to a variety of safety concerns [72].…”
