Abstract:On December 29, 1987, the Hawaii Department of Health requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigate chronic health effects of sugarcane smoke among sugarcane workers. Since the smoke contains "biogenic silica" fibers (BSF), chronic respiratory diseases were of particular concern.
