Health effect of chronic exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2) on women employed in viscose industry

Abstract: Many women are exposed to carbon disulfide (C2) hazards at work every day. Working with C2 may cause some women to experience abnormalities in their reproductive health. Until now obtained data is generally concentrated on the health effects of C2 observed in the viscose industry. To date, C2 has not been studied precisely for its potential to have damaging effects on female reproductive system, especially the frequency of menstrual disturbances and the course of menopause. The aim of the study was to sum up f… Show more

“…Later on it was revealed that the most relevant health problems connected with CS 2 exposure are those related to the cardiovascular system and central nervous systems, as well as to retinal angiopathies and impairments of color vision [20]. Toxic effects on the female reproductive system, (menstrual disturbances and precocious menopause occurrence) that appeared in workers chronically exposed to CS 2 in their workplace in the viscose industry were also well documented and discussed in a comprehensive review article [21]. An epidemiological study that extended over 10 years (1975)(1976)(1977)(1978)(1979)(1980)(1981)(1982)(1983)(1984)(1985), including 251 workers exposed to CS 2 and 124 controls, was realized in two viscose rayon factories in Czechoslovakia.…”

“…55 Chronic low dose exposure to CS 2 , a major component of the viscose rayon industry exhaust, affects human physiology especially the cardiovascular and nervous system. 8,57,58 Studies have documented abnormalities in blood pressure, 59 ECG findings, 60 and other blood parameters like total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. 61 Similarly CS 2 exposure has been linked to peripheral neuropathy, 62 abnormalities in colour vision 63 and neurobehavioral pattern.…”

“…7 Multiple studies have documented the adverse health effects of exposure to the chemical pollutants that emanate from textile and associated chemical manufacturing. 8,9 In India, research on the health effects of such textile industry has mostly been focussed on individuals who are occupationally exposed to the chemical pollutants. [10][11][12] The health effects of residing near manufacturing industries are not as well documented.…”
