HEALTH education sessions about smoking, in a comprehensive school, were designed to promote decision-making ability rather than to deliver specific health warnings. Short-term results obtained by questionnaire showed that children become more realistic about the experiences of and reasons for early smoking, but their belief in some health norms declined. The results are discussed in terms of the psychological processes which may be involved in early smoking and the response to this type of educational approach.
