Health consequences of forest fires in Indonesia

Abstract: Smoke from forest fires blanketed the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra in late 1997. Population-based longitudinal survey data are combined with satellite measures of aerosol levels to assess the impact of the fires on adult health. To account for unobserved differences between haze and non-haze areas, we compare changes in health of individual respondents. Between 1993 and 1997, individuals exposed to haze experienced greater increases in difficulties with activities of daily living than their cou… Show more

“…Smoke, toxic fumes and haze create poor visibility and, consequently hinder evacuation and the use of firefighting aircraft. They are also responsible for short and long-term health problems (e.g., [101][102][103]) and even loss of lives which can occur not only during but also in the aftermath of an event. The upward convective motion of the plume is powered by the amount of energy released by the combustion, integrated by the latent heat released when vapor condensation occurs [104][105][106][107].…”

“…Severe haze in Southeast Asia has attracted the attention of governments and the general public in recent years due to its impact on local economy, air quality, and public health (Miettinen et al, 2011;Kunii et al, 2002;Frankenberg et al, 2005;Crippa et al, 2016). Widespread biomass burning activities are one of the major sources of haze events in Southeast Asia.…”
