Health consequences of androgenic anabolic steroid use

Abstract: Background The lifetime prevalence of androgenic anabolic steroid abuse is estimated to be around 6% for men, but there is limited knowledge about the side effects of these drugs. Objective To investigate mortality and morbidity amongst users of androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS). Methods In this retrospective matched cohort study, 545 male subjects tested positive for AAS in Danish fitness centres during the period 3 January 2006 to 1 March 2018. Subjects were matched with 5450 male controls. In addition, 644… Show more

“…When administered to healthy individuals, both ACTH and hydrocortisone produce an enlargement of SGs and outbreaks of acne lesions (Strauss & Kligman, ). Indeed, use of anabolic steroids is well recognised as a clinically relevant cause of acne (Horwitz, Andersen & Dalhoff, ). Conversely, adrenalectomy (surgical removal of the adrenal glands) reduces sebum secretion levels, and can also reduce acne severity (Pochi, Strauss & Mescon, ; Stratakis et al ., ).…”

“…Also, AAS abuse is associated with mood and anxiety disorders (15). In a retrospective study, men who tested positive for AAS in fitness centers had a higher mortality risk compared to matched controls (16). It is unclear whether this can be causally attributed to anabolic steroids abuse.…”

“…In those using AAS, basal blood shows increased hemoglobin [18,46], high hematocrit counts [47], and high in ammatory markers [48], including high white blood cell count [28], high neutrophil count [49], and high Creactive protein (CRP) [50,51]. These side-effects may result in costly treatment, and therefore a negative impact for public health [52].…”
