Health Care Pollution And Public Health Damage In The United States: An Update

Abstract: An up-to-date assessment of environmental emissions in the US health care sector is essential to help policy makers hold the health care industry accountable to protect public health. We update nationallevel US health-sector emissions. We also estimate state-level emissions for the first time and examine associations with state-level energy systems and health care quality and access metrics. Economywide modeling showed that US health care greenhouse gas emissions rose 6 percent from 2010 to 2018, reaching 1,69… Show more

“…In addition, building design and operation influence population health by affecting levels of pollution and other environmental factors, such as carbon footprint, related to climate change (3). Overall, about one-fourth of all global healthcare greenhouse gas emissions are generated by the U.S. healthcare system, which is more than any other nation's healthcare system (4).…”

“…The COVID19 pandemic exposed not only health disparities but also other societal issues such as supply chain and sustainability. The health care industry is responsible for 4.4-4.6% of the CO2 emissions more than aviation or shipping (6). Even beyond supply chains, one of the keynote addresses denoted additional areas of broad societal responsibilities for radiology and industry (Table 2).…”

“…1619 Another source of environmental pollution is environmental hazards in the manufacture and disposal of pharmaceuticals and biohazardous products, 20,21 including inhaled anesthetics that are themselves potent GHGs. 22–24 Based on an economic input–output life cycle assessment modeling and national health expenditures, Eckelman and Sherman 16 and Eckelman et al 25 estimated an annual loss of 614 000 disability-adjusted life years between 2003 and 2013 and 388 000 in 2018 due to pollution from health care.…”
