Health Benefits of Manuka Honey as an Essential Constituent for Tissue Regeneration

Abstract: In addition to bacterial growth inhibition, glyoxal (GO) and MGO from Manuka honey can enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration by their immunomodulatory property. Further studies are needed to provide detailed information about active components of Manuka honey and their potential efficacy in different diseases.

“…Honey has been used in wound therapy for several decades. Recent studies have shown that honey has an inhibitory effect on approximately 60 bacteria species and acts against aerobes and anaerobes (15). In addition, it has antifungal action against Aspergillus species, yeast and dermatophytes (16).…”

“…In addition, it has antifungal action against Aspergillus species, yeast and dermatophytes (16). Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand, contains rich chemical ingredients that have, among others, antioxidant effects that aid in rapid wound healing and faster tissue regeneration (15). The advantages of honey include a high osmotic effect on wounds, which inhibits microbial growth, allowing creation of a perfect osmotic gradient that would mop up exudate from the wound, enabling faster healing.…”

“…Manuka ( Leptospermum scoparium ) honey (MH) is broadly known for its therapeutic properties in epithelial regeneration and wound‐healing . Numerous in‐vitro studies have demonstrated MH and its active component, methylglyoxal (MGO), activity against both the planktonic and biofilms forms of a wide range of bacteria, including S aureus (methicillin‐sensitive S aureus and MRSA) and P aeruginosa .…”

“…It has been observed that dressing with honey reduces odor in infected wounds. There are many literatures suggesting that honey can be used effectively as a dressing for wounds, burns, and skin ulcers [5,6,9,20,21]. Not all honeys have the same effect.…”

“…Since manuka honey has biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiproliferative, scientists still study on the Manuka honey [21].…”
