Background: Cancer is a major public health problem both in our country and worldwide due to its disease burden, fatality and tendency for increased incidence. In Turkey, breast cancer ranks first with an incidence of 41.6% and cervical cancer is the tenth most common cancer with an incidence of 4.4%. Objectives and Design: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 240 women aged from 15 to 65 years admitted to a gynecology-obstetrics outpatient clinic of a private hospital in Gaziantep. Study data were collected by the investigators through a 36-item questionnaire form which was generated using information gathered from similar surveys in the literature. Results: It was determined that 34.6% of women were high-school graduates, and 64.2% had a medium income level. The majority (79.2%) stated that they never performed BSE and 49.5% of them said that they did not know how to do it. Some 79.2% did not know what a Pap smear was and 73.3% had not experienced a smear test ever. Conclusions: In this study, we found that most of the women had insufficient knowledge of breast and cervical cancer, while knowledge and practices increased with the education level. Based on these findings, we suggest that there is a need for planning, implementation and assessment of health policies and healthcare services at the national and regional level and we believe that nurses working in the field of protective health services should develop educational programmes for women with a primary focus on cancer in order to increase awareness among the female population in Turkey.

Background: Japanese women in their 40s or older have been encouraged to attend breast cancer screening. However, the breast cancer screening rate in Japan is not as high as in Europe and the United States. The aim of this study was to identify psychological and personal characteristics of women concerning their participation in breast cancer screening using the Health Belief Model (HBM). In addition, the attributes of screening more easily accepted by participants were analyzed by conjoint analysis. Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study of 3,200 age 20-69 women, data were collected by an anonymous questionnaire. Questions were based on HBM and personal characteristics, and included attitudes on hypothetical screening attributes. Data of women aged 40-69 were analyzed by logistic regression and conjoint analysis to clarify the factors affecting their participation in breast cancer screening. Results: Among responses collected from 1,280 women of age 20-69, the replies of 993 women of age 40-69 were used in the analysis. Regarding the psychological characteristics based on HBM, the odds ratios were significantly higher in "importance of cancer screening" (95%CI: 1.21-2.47) and "benefits of cancer screening" (95%CI: 1.09-2.49), whereas the odds ratio was significantly lower in "barriers to participation before cancer screening" (95%CI: 0.27-0.51). Conjoint analysis revealed that the respondents, overall, preferred screening to be low cost and by female staff members. Furthermore, it was also clarified that attributes of screening dominant in decision-making were influenced by the employment status and the type of medical insurance of the women. Conclusions: In order to increase participation in breast cancer screening, it is necessary to disseminate accurate knowledge on cancer screening and to reduce barriers to participation. In addition, the attributes of screening more easily accepted were inexpensive, provided by female staff, executed in a hospital and finished in a short time.

Abstract:Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, and the seventh overall, with an estimated 528,000 new cases in 2012. In Egypt the incidence of cervical cancer is 866 per year where mortality rate is 373 per year. The current study aims to determine women's beliefs and knowledge towards cervical cancer and Pap smear. The study was conducted at the outpatient obstetrics clinics of two hospitals namely El-Mainshawy health insurance Hospital, and El -Aiada El-Shamela at Tanta governorate. The study subjects comprised 1000 women attending the above mentioned settings two tools were used: An interview assessment sheet and the Health Believe Model (HBM). Results of the current study illustrated that Out of the 1,000 women interviewed, (68.0%) could know the definition of cervical cancer and related to a virus as its causative agent. About 95% of the women did not have an idea of the risk factors for cervical cancer, the knowledge about Pap test is quite poor, only 13.3% identify Pap smear test while 86.7% had no idea at all. In terms of the perceived benefits of Pap test, about 50.3% of the participants believed that Pap tests are the best way to detect cervical cancer, 42.9% believed that cervical cancer can be cured easily if detected early, and 62% disagree that a Pap test is important for save their health. The present study concluded that inefficient utilization of cervical cancer and its screening test would be affected by poor knowledge and negative beliefs related to cervical cancer screening in women. It was recommended that development of effective intervention programs strategies for Egyptian women and identify those women who are most at risk for cervical cancer and would benefit from intervention programs to increase cervical cancer screening rates.
