Health Behavior Risk Factors Across Age as Predictors of Cardiovascular Disease Diagnosis

Abstract: Objectives The current study examines the prevalence of health risk behaviors and their cumulative effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) among a sample of adults. Age cohort is also examined to determine the role of age in predicting CVD and risky health behaviors. Method Medical records of a sample of adults from the Seattle Longitudinal Study categorized into one of four age-group cohorts were examined. Data regarding participants’ health risk behaviors were examined individually and cumulatively for pre… Show more

“…The majority of investigations that have examined relationships among health behaviors and inflammation in the context of aging have focused on poor health behaviors such as excessive alcohol use, smoking, lack of physical activity and short sleep duration (8, 1012). More recently, however, there has been a paradigm shift in health behaviors research to focus on positive health behaviors, defined as voluntary and modifiable actions that help prevent illness and promote health, and their associated health benefits.…”

“…Among adults, it has been shown that clustering of adverse health behaviours is common and increases the morbidity and mortality (Boden-Albala and Sacco 2000; Cardi et al 2009). It was also demonstrated that unhealthy behaviours tend to aggregate since early ages (Jessor 1984;Talashek et al 2003;Gorely et al 2007;te Velde et al 2007), but it is still unknown if dietary habits cluster together with other known unhealthy behaviours in early adolescence, since it may be expected that at this age dietary choices are still under a relatively high parental control (Birch and Fisher 1998;Savage et al 2007).…”

“…The prevalence of CV disease has been shown to increase not only with increased number of behavioral risk factors but also with age and obesity level [59]. In addition, obesity was positively associated with the risk of premature death from endogenous causes in populations as young as children supporting the view that childhood obesity is a marker of early metabolic derangement, whereas most of the other risk factors evolve later [60].…”
