The data for this research contains the in-situ measured activity concentration of radionuclides and gamma-radiation dose rate obtained from the radiometric survey in Azara development area of Awe Local Government, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The data were manually collected in eight (8) locations with 20 data taken from each point using a portable hand held Thermo Scientific Interceptor and a radionuclide IdentiFINDER. The descriptive statistical analysis of the data was equally explored for possible statistical relationships. The result obtained is made available publicly for further extended analyses that can provide insights into the safety status of the study area from radiological health concerns. The data could also serve as a significant baseline radiometric data for future researches and monitoring initiative in Azara and its environs. The tin mining activities in the suburbs of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, have resulted in technical enhancement of the natural background radiation as well as higher activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides in the topsoil of mining sites and their environs. Several studies have considered the radiological human health risks of the mining activity; however, to our knowledge no documented study has investigated the radiological impacts on biota. Hence, an attempt is made to assess potential hazards using published data from the literature and the ERICA Tool. This paper considers the effects of mining and milling on terrestrial organisms like shrubs, large mammals, small burrowing mammals, birds (duck), arthropods (earth worm), grasses, and herbs. The dose rates and risk quotients to these organisms are computed using conservative values for activity concentrations of natural radionuclides reported in Bitsichi and Bukuru mining areas. The results suggest that grasses, herbs, lichens, bryophytes and shrubs receive total dose rates that are of potential concern. The effects of dose rates to specific indicator species of interest are highlighted and discussed. We conclude that further investigation and proper regulations should be set in place in order to reduce the risk posed by the tin mining activity on biota. This paper also presents a brief overview of the impact of mineral mining on biota based on documented literature for other countries.

We have read with great interest the paper which was published in Natural Science, 2014 issue number 6 titled "Estimation of annual effective dose due to ingestion of natural radionuclides in cattle in tin mining area of Jos Plateau, Nigeria" [1]. The paper motivated us to use state-of-the-art computational technique to investigate the risks of the tin mining activity in Jos-Plateau, Nigeria on large mammals (e.g. cattle). The Tier 2 Erica Tool assessment was used to estimate the total dose rate and risk quotients of these reference terrestrial animals. Our investigation revealed that the expected and conservative risk quotients of large mammals due to internal and external exposure to enhanced level of radioactivity are 0.05 and 0.16, respectively. Since the risk quotients are less than unity, this indicates that there is less than 5% probability that the screen dose rate (10 µGy•h −1 ) is exceeded. The estimated total dose rate to large mammals is 0.52 µGy•h −1 which is not statistically significant. A critical analysis of [1] is presented in the introductory part of this paper.
