Health and adult productivity: The relation between adult nutrition, helminths, and agricultural, hunting, and fishing yields in the Bolivian Amazon

Abstract: These findings suggest that the effects of adult infection and nutritional stress may be less clearly identified outside of the context of wage labor. Further research linking adult physical activity levels and metabolic rates to productivity in diverse contexts is needed.

“…Standard age- and sex-based reference values for clinical practice were used to determine thresholds for anemia and elevated CRP (acute inflammation) classification (Mayo Clinic 2015). Finally, parasitic infection was determined based on assessment of fecal samples from a sub-sample of 115 study participants (in 2003 and 2007) (Tanner et al 2009; Tanner et al 2013). Children were classified as infected vs. not by presence or absence of any hookworm in fecal samples.…”

“…The TAPS panel is ideally suited to examine the existence and magnitude of catch-up growth and the extent to which early environmental influences may shape variation in body size and composition later in life (e.g., Godoy et al 2010a; Tanner et al 2014). In addition, these data also allow for the evaluation of how particular dimensions of lifestyle change (e.g., diet, engagement in wage labor and subsistence activities, access to material wealth; level of traditional knowledge) play a role in shaping both early patterns of development and adult health outcomes (e.g., McDade et al, 2007; Reyes-Garcia et al, 2009; Rosinger et al, 2013; Tanner et al, 2013). …”

“…Tsimane' children and adults have a 56-80 % prevalence of parasitic helminthic infections (10,11) . Infectious diseases, including GI infection, historically have accounted for more than 50 % of all deaths (45) .…”

“…The paper focuses on Tsimane' because they lack access to clean water, yet are highly active and live in a hot, humid environment, creating high water needs. Additionally, previous research has documented high prevalences of water-related diarrhoeal diseases and parasitic infection (10,11) . …”
