The study examined the use of songs from outside the worship liturgy of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe (MCZ) in the Ruwa Section, Goromonzi Circuit. The circuit had six congregations with mixed views on the above-referred songs. A debate on the choice of worship songs was identified as a problem that needed research. The researchers looked at the spirituality of songs and their bearing on the MCZ music tradition. The researchers adopted a qualitative research paradigm. Data was collected through interviews, focus group discussions, a self-administered questionnaire and participant observation over four months. A sample of 120 informants was drawn from the youth, choristers, the elderly, and church leaders using stratified random and simple random sampling techniques. Findings show that not all songs drew congregants into spirituality. Regardless of spirituality in Christian contemporary worship songs, some MCZ members did not embrace the songs as they were from outside their canon. The research observed that some youths and middle aged MCZ members embraced worship songs that reflected their cultural musical styles. However, some of the songs regardless of the Christian text, lacked spirituality. The researchers recommend that the MCZ consider canonising some of the contemporary worship songs based on spirituality.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for Christian believers worldwide, especially in developing countries like South Africa. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed COVID-19 as a pandemic. Many activities were suspended, including church gatherings. As a result, like many Christian believers, during the pandemic, the researcher was spiritually and emotionally affected and suddenly filled with fear, depression, panic, loss, and loneliness. During the peak of the pandemic, the researcher used gospel music and liturgical hymns to uplift the researcher’s spiritual well-being. Although gospel music and liturgy hymn music have been used as devotional and spiritual music for the well-being of religious individuals, little academic attention has been given to gospel music and liturgy hymns. Hence, this article aims to provide important insights concerning the researcher’s personal experience in using gospel music and liturgical hymns during the pandemic. In this article, autoethnography was used as a research methodology. This article extends the literature about the researcher‘s experience of using gospel music and liturgical hymns as devotional and spiritual music for well-being. The article presents significant awareness and insights into gospel music and liturgical hymns during the pandemic. The findings of this article are outlined under the following three themes: Feeling vulnerable during the pandemic; (b) the role of gospel music in liturgical hymns during the pandemic; and (c) the use of gospel music and liturgical hymns for healing during the pandemic. The article affirms that gospel music and liturgical hymns can improve psychological and spiritual well-being. In this article, I examine the emotional content of songs sung in Christian churches. An analysis of the lyrical content of the songs that have been tracked by Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) from 1988 to 2018, shows there is a definition of the Christian life that is set before the church and in turn sung by it. The word “joy” appears 37 times and the word “praise” is used 152 times in the 133 songs that comprise the contemporary praise and worship hymnody in the defined time period. In the same time frame, the word sad or any of its derivatives (sadly, sadness, etc.) never occurs in the group of songs that are being discussed. Nor is the word “sorrow” ever used. There are two conclusions that can be drawn from the lack of the use of the word sad. The first is that sadness is undervalued. The second conclusion is that the word “sad” is not a good song word, meaning that it is awkward to sing and fit in the rhythm or meter of a song. The first conclusion relates to the lexical value of a word and the second to the semantic value. To understand the emotional content of music, the texts which provide a lexical meaning need to be examined. Secondly, the semantic meaning, which is composed of the cultural connotations, needs to be considered. The first part, the lexical, is considered by looking at only the text. The second, the semantic, involves looking at how the words and music (both apart and together) conceal and reveal meanings that surpass the lexical level. Thus, the first part of the present work will look at the lyric’s words devoid of context while the second part of the essay will examine the fullness of the songs. As the semantic levels are explored, they will be brought together with the lyrics and the previous level and the question of whether there is an overpromising of joy in the songs will be answered.
