Head-to-Head Comparison of Different Software Solutions for AVC Quantification Using Contrast-Enhanced MDCT

Abstract: Aortic valve calcification (AVC) in aortic stenosis patients has diagnostic and prognostic implications. Little is known about the interchangeability of AVC obtained from different multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) software solutions. Contrast-enhanced MDCT data sets of 50 randomly selected aortic stenosis patients were analysed using three different software vendors (3Mensio, CVI42, Syngo.Via). A subset of 10 patients were analysed twice for the estimation of intra-observer variability. Intra- and inte… Show more

“…Due to the contrast‐enhanced MDCT used, threshold adjustment can be necessary to discriminate between calcium and intraluminal contrast medium, which can lead to difficulties in reproducibility. However, in our study, intra‐ and inter‐observer reliability was excellent, which is in line with previous publications 16 . Therefore, we believe that contrast‐enhanced MDCT is sufficient to estimate AVC and could be a useful addendum to routine clinical practice.…”

“…Transoesophageal echocardiography was initially used to estimate the right valve size, but nowadays MDCT has become the standard procedure, which has led to a reduction in paravalvular regurgitation 18 , 19 . In line with previous MDCT studies, our study demonstrates excellent intra-observer and inter-observer results for all observers involved, independent of the level of experience, when following a standardized analysis procedure 10 , 11 , 19 23 . Due to the high measurement accuracy achieved with MDCT, it initially seems counterintuitive that there were differences in the selection of the valve sizes between and within the observers in the current study.…”
