HD gas analysis with gas chromatography and quadrupole mass spectrometer

Abstract: A gas analyzer system has been developed to analyze Hydrogen-Deuteride (HD) gas for producing frozen-spin polarized HD targets, which are used for hadron photoproduction experiments at SPring-8. Small amounts of ortho-H 2 and para-D 2 gas mixtures (∼0.01%) in the purified HD gas are a key to realize a frozen-spin polarized target. However, there was an intrinsic difficulty to measure these small mixtures in the HD gas with a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) because D + and [H 2 D] + produced from the ionizat… Show more

“…The intensity of HD + was reasonably low compared with that of H 2 + , and no D 2 + was detected [26,27]. Because chemisorbed D 2 O or OD groups on the specimen surface are easily exchanged with H 2 O in the atmosphere, the surface density of D decreases.…”

“…Although many alternative sensor technologies have been described for analytes of interest in tritium fuel cycle processes (Refs. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], none of these technologies have ever been directly implemented or used for detailed chemical analysis of tritiumcontaining isotopes in-situ to the process within the SRS Tritium Plant.…”
