“…Eighty-seven percent of tested anti-HBe positive patients showed PC and/or CP mutants. Unlike a previous study [Rodriguez-Frias et al, 1995], and in accordance with Lopez et al [2002], we showed the presence of a G 1896 A stop codon PC mutation associated with CP mutations in HBV/A infection. This suggests that the G 1896 A stop codon mutation occurs even in HBV/A infected patients, at least in some cases, despite the presence of a C at position 1858 pairing with the G 1896.…”

“…Precore mutant HBV strains have long been detected in chronically infected Argentinean patients (38,39). In the present work, mutations in the precore region and in the core promoter were found to be very frequent among blood donors.…”

“…The presence of this mutation was also confirmed in three other samples (4.0%) which contained both wild-type codon 28 and mutant codon 28. Similarly, López et al (39) stop codon 28 mutation completely abolishes HBeAg synthesis (7). Although HBeAg is not required for viral replication, HBV strains unable to express HBeAg can be considered slow replicative variants.…”
