HazMat transportation safety assessment: Analysis of a “Viareggio-like” incident in the Netherlands

Abstract: Relevant safety issues are associated with hazardous materials transportation, especially when transport routes cross populated areas. On March 6th, 2015, a passenger train collided with the last rail car of a freight train in Tilburg, the Netherlands. The last car contained 50 t of liquefied 1,3butadiene. As a result of the collision, the last car showed deformation; a small leakage occurred but fortunately with no relevant consequences. However, extremely severe consequences could have happened, such as in t… Show more

“…A study carried out in the Netherlands, generated a hypothesis similar to this study, starting from the fact that rail transport of hazmats in the Netherlands is organized in a manner similar to the road network in Romania (right through city centers)- fact that creates a strong link between rail transport, urban planning, and the development near railways [ 37 ]. One of the study's main conclusions was that although the policymakers responsible for transportation considered improving railway safety, systematizing a consequence-based approach for land use planning will largely contribute to risk reduction [ 37 ].…”

“…Обеспечению безопасности при перевозке опасных грузов (ОГ) на железнодорожном транспорте посвящено значительное число работ [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Вовлечение в хозяйственную деятельность большого количества ресурсов, эксплуатация сложных технических систем, рост потребления энергии и другие мероприятия приводят к увеличению объемов и номенклатуры перевозимых ОГ.…”
