Arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) have been recognized as most toxic heavy metals that are continuously released into the environment, both from natural sources and from anthropogenic production of fertilizers, industrial activities, and waste disposal. Therefore, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb are found in increasing concentrations in bodies of water, fodder, feed, and in the tissues of livestock, including poultry, in the surroundings of industrial areas, leading to metabolic, structural, and functional abnormalities in various organs in all animals. In poultry, bioaccumulation of As, Pb, Cd, and Hg occurs in many organs (mainly in the kidneys, liver, reproductive organs, and lungs) as a result of continuous exposure to heavy metals. Consumption of Cd lowers the efficiency of feed conversion, egg production, and growth in poultry. Chronic exposure to As, Pb, Cd, and Hg at low doses can change the microscopic structure of tissues (mainly in the brain, liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs) as a result of the increased content of these heavy metals in these tissues. Histopathological changes occurring in the kidneys, liver, and reproductive organs are reflected in their negative impact on enzyme activity and serum biochemical parameters. Metal toxicity is determined by route of exposure, length of exposure, and absorbed dosage, whether chronic and acute. This review presents a discussion of bioaccumulation of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg in poultry and the associated histopathological changes and toxic concentrations in different tissues.

Environmental pollution, especially water pollution with heavy metals has a direct economic and health impact on the animal industry. This study investigated the impact of water pollution with heavy metals on grazing goats’ haemato-biochemical and oxidative stress parameters, as well as rumen function. Fifty Egyptian Nubian goats were divided into two groups: a control group (n = 13) raised indoors on clean tap water and an exposed group (n = 37) drinking from a polluted drainage water canal with cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb). The exposed goats showed significant reductions in RBCs, PCV, Hb, TLC, TP, albumin, globulin, Ca, and P, and significant elevations in MDA. Significant elevation in rumen pH in exposed goats compared to control goat was recorded. Significant reductions in TVFA, ammonia, AST, ALT, GGT, Ca and P were observed in exposed goats compared with the control goats. Positive correlation between Cd/Pb and rumen pH was recorded, while negative correlation was found in association with TVFA, Ammonia, AST, ALT, GGT, Ca and P. Pb and Cd levels were significantly elevated in the rumen and blood of exposed goats compared to control goats. The study concluded that goats watered in polluted areas suffered from alterations in hematological, serum biochemical, rumen fluid constituents, oxidative stress, and disturbance in mineral levels. These results highlight the harmful impact of heavy metals, particularly lead and cadmium, on goat’s health status and body function.

This study was designed to determine the lead or cadmium exposure of Barki rams and the beneficial role of Nannochlorposis oculata (N. oculata) 4% as a feed supplement, as well as its mitigating role against these elements’ impacts concerning performance, biochemical markers of liver enzymes and kidney function, thyroid hormone activity, and oxidative stress markers. Six groups of 36 Barki rams (33.63 ± 1.29 kg) were divided into G1: which served as control; G2: was given 4% dietary N. oculata; G3: was given oral 1 mg/kg cadmium chloride; G4: was given 5 mg/kg/day lead acetate; G5: was given oral 1 mg/kg cadmium chloride and 4% dietary N. oculata, and G6: was given oral 5 mg/kg/day lead acetate and 4% dietary N. oculata; and treatments were continued for 60 days. Cadmium and lead-exposed groups exhibited lower and weaker weight gain as well as feed conversion ratio, respectively, than the control and other groups. Additionally, levels of T3, T4, total proteins, albumin, and glutathione (GSH) were significantly reduced in both G3 and G4 compared to control. However, urea, creatinine, ALT, AST, total cholesterol, triglycerides, protein carbonyl content (PCC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly increased (P ≤ 0.05) in cadmium and lead-exposed groups. Dietary N. oculata (4%) improves serum proteins, creatinine, urea, T4, and oxidative stress indicators as compared to the control group. Finally, 4% dietary N. oculata greatly enhances the investigated parameters in terms of performance, thyroid hormones, serum biochemical, and antioxidant activity and may assist in reducing the endocrine disrupting effects of Pb and Cd.
