Abstract:The author of the article points out the main shifts in Hayden White's reflection on narrative history writing. These shifts are related to his emphasis on the role of tropes and figures in dealing with the problem of narrative representation in the past. In the author's view, White's works challenge a traditional understanding of history, while stressing terminal validity and plurality in narrative representations of historical reality.
