HAWC+, the Far-Infrared Camera and Polarimeter for SOFIA

Abstract: High-resolution Airborne Wide-band Camera (HAWC[Formula: see text]) is the facility far-infrared imager and polarimeter for SOFIA, NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. It is designed to cover the portion of the infrared spectrum that is completely inaccessible to ground-based observatories and which is essential for studies of astronomical sources with temperatures between tens and hundreds of degrees Kelvin. Its ability to make polarimetric measurements of aligned dust grains provides a un… Show more

“…Polarimetric data for ρ Oph A were obtained using HAWC+/SOFIA (Harper et al 2018) on May 5 2017 as part of the Guaranteed Time Observing (GTO) program. We used HAWC+ bands C (89 µm) and D (154 µm) that nominally provide angular resolutions of 7.8 and 13.6 FWHM (full width at half maximum), respectively.…”

“…The newly commissioned HAWC+ far-IR polarimeter for SOFIA (Dowell et al 2010;Harper et al 2018) allows us to revisit the topic of molecular cloud far-IR polarization spectra, but with better angular resolution and sensitivity. In this work, we present polarimetric observations of the nearby star forming region ρ Oph A obtained with HAWC+ at two different far-IR wavelengths, 89 µm and 154 µm.…”

“…The polarimetry observations were carried out with the SOFIA telescope, using the HAWC+ instrument (Harper et al 2018) in summer 2018. We used the band E, with a nominal wavelength of 214 µm (1.4 THz).…”
