Hatchling Size and Aspects of Biology in the Deep‐Sea Amphipod Genus Eurythenes (Crustacea: Amphipoda)

Abstract: Records attributed to Eurythenes gryllus are discussed in the light of described morphological variation, and the existence of a third species in the genus is postulated. The presence of five pairs of oostegites in E. gryllus, a character almost unique among the Amphipoda, is confirmed. Brooding females of E. gryllus and E. obesus, captured in deep midwater hauls in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean, are reported for the first time. The 120 mm E. gryllus female carried 237 hatchlings (mean length 11.13 mm) and … Show more

“…Instead, H. dubia dominates the carrion consumption (Table 3). Moreover, H. dubia appears to prey on S. schellenbergi, which may further deter S. schellenbergi from approaching carrion in this depth range (Thurston and Bett 1995). Uristes sp.…”

“…The larger benthopelagic S. schellenbergi and E. gryllus are thought to rely heavily, if not exclusively, on nekton carrion (Thurston 1990;Kaiser and Moore 1999;) because of the efficiency with which they can locate, ingest, and store large amounts of carrion (SainteMarie 1992). The smaller demersal species Uristes sp.…”
