Complete larval development of the Monkey River Prawn Macrobrachium lar (Palaemonidae) using a novel greenwater technique

This study documents the complete larval development of the Monkey River Prawn Macrobrachium lar using a new greenwater rearing technique. Approximately 6,000 larvae were reared for 110 days at an initial stocking density of 1 ind./6 L. Salinity at hatch was 10 ± 2 ppt and progressively increased to 30 ± 2 ppt until decapodids had metamorphosed. Temperature was maintained at 28 ± 0.5°C, pH at 7.8 ± 0.2, DO2 > 6.5 mg/L and NH4+ and NH3 ≤ 1.5 and ≤0.1 ppm respectively throughout the culture period. Larval development was extended and occurred through 13 zoeal stages, with the first decapodid measuring 6.2 ± 0.63 mm in total length observed after 77 days. 5 decapodids in total were produced, and overall survival to this stage was 0.08%. Overall, the pattern of larval growth shares similarities with those of other Macrobrachium spp. that have a prolonged/normal type of development, and it is likely that larvae underwent mark time moulting which contributed to the lengthened development duration. While this study represents a significant breakthrough in efforts to domesticate M. lar, improvement of larval survival rates and decreased time till metamorphosis are required before it can become fully viable for commercial scale aquaculture.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/2193-1801-3-568) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

-Effects of four feeding regimes on the development and feed intake, survival, productivity, and growth of Macrobrachium amazonicum larvae were investigated. Larvae were fed from stage II to IX, as follows: Artemia nauplii + inert diet during the entire larval cycle (AIn); Artemia nauplii for the entire larval cycle + inert diet from stage V onward (A/AIn); Artemia nauplii until stage IV + inert diet from stage IV onward (A/In); and only inert diet for the entire larval cycle (In). Each feeding regime (treatment) was carried out in three 50-L rectangular black tanks, set up in a recirculating system, filled with 10 salinity brackish water, and stocked at 81.8±0.8 larvae/L. The larval stage index, occurrence of Artemia nauplii and/or inert feed into the digestive tract, survival (number of larvae and postlarvae), productivity (number of postlarvae/L), and weight gain (mg) were evaluated. Larval development was similar in treatments AIn, A/Ain, and A/In, but was delayed in treatment In. Artemia nauplii were ingested by larvae irrespective of developmental stages, while inert feed was ingested only from stage III onward. Survival and productivity were higher in treatment AIn and decreased according to the number of days larvae were fed Artemia nauplii. Macrobrachium amazonicum larvae are omnivorous and polytrophic, but live feed is essential in the first stages and act as a complementary diet in the last half of larval cycle. There is a potential for inert diet to replace Artemia in the last phase of development if the nutrient composition matches larvae requirements. The combination of Artemia nauplii and inert diet during all larval cycles is the best management to maximize productivity.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of red, yellow, green, violet, blue, and white light in Macrobrachium amazonicum larviculture. The trials were composed of six treatments (i.e., colors red, yellow, green, blue, violet, and white light in tanks) with four replicates each. Transparent tanks of 1 L of water, 10 salinity, and 2400 newly hatched larvae were used in trials. The larvae were fed Artemia salina nauplii and complemented with commercial shrimp feed daily. The light color affected the temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen in the water culture and nauplii consumption, survival, and productivity of M. amazonicum. In the tanks with red light, the mean temperature was lower, while the oxygen and pH levels were higher than those with other colors. The mean consumption of A. salina nauplii was 15% higher by M. amazonicum in tanks with blue and violet light than red light. No difference in larval development was observed; however, larvae cultured under white light completed the larval cycle four days earlier than those cultured under red light. The productivity of larvae cultivated under white and violet light was 45% greater than larvae cultured under red light, and the survival was > 75%. Results indicated that M. amazonicum larval cultivation should be performed in tanks under bright light, preferably white, since other colors may negatively affect the larval development.
