Background and Purpose
The functionality of medical equipment is critical to quality healthcare delivery. With regular preventive maintenance, the usability and lifetime of medical equipment can be extended. Adherence to preventive maintenance schedule is challenging without a robust inventory management system. This paper presents a web based medical equipment inventory maintenance system (MEIMS) software.
Methods
The MEIMS software was developed using the waterfall model of software engineering methodology based on a 3-tier architecture comprising the graphical user interface, processor, and database server. The system consists of a user-friendly interface which ensured an effective and efficient medical equipment management with prompt maintenance schedule notification for the biomedical engineers. Data collected from a public hospital in Lagos, Nigeria were tested on the MEIMS software.
Results
The results revealed that the MEIMS software is user friendly and easy to use. The dashboard of the interface design indicates a summary of the total number of equipment, the total registered users, total medical equipment under repair, total equipment purchased, monitoring log, usage analysis, and inventory. the usage analysis interface design for new equipment and its daily usage input. It displays the total usage checks, percentage usage and indicates if the equipment was used that day.
Conclusions
This developed software was shown to be a helpful system for medical equipment workflow management to control asset, inventory, scheduled preventive maintenance, and corrective maintenance module.
