Harnessing Offshore Wind Energy along the Mexican Coastline in the Gulf of Mexico—An Exploratory Study including Sustainability Criteria

Abstract: Mexico has more than 40 years of researching, investing, and obtaining electric power through wind energy. Within the country, there are highly windy areas, such as the Isthmus of Tehuantepec or the state of Tamaulipas, and there are about 2500 MW installed and 70,000 MW tested, all onshore. There are still no offshore wind farms in Mexico, despite having two main coasts, the East and the West, with the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, respectively. Although the Mexican coastal states of the Gulf of Mexic… Show more

“…Offshore wind power densities of 80 W/m 2 and 160 W/m 2 were reported 10 m and 100 m above the mean sea level [30]. MERRA-2 and ERA5 data were used and offshore plant capacity factors of 32%, 37%, and 46% were reported for Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatán locations in Mexico [31]. Similar types of offshore wind power resources have been reported for Oman [32] and Portugal [33].…”

“…Also, relative to the beaches in the states of Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatán, Hernández Galvez, Chuck Liévano, Sarracino Martínez, Lastres Danguillecourt, Dorrego Portela, Narcía, Saldaña Flores, Pampillón González, Perea-Moreno and Hernandez-Escobedo [23] report the analysis and viability of using offshore wind energy. This is due to the availability of data on that area, but there are also stated sustainability standards that can be applied in other areas, and data from MERRA- [24].…”
