Harmonization and standardization of data for a pan-European cohort on SARS- CoV-2 pandemic

Abstract: The European project ORCHESTRA intends to create a new pan-European cohort to rapidly advance the knowledge of the effects and treatment of COVID-19. Establishing processes that facilitate the merging of heterogeneous clusters of retrospective data was an essential challenge. In addition, data from new ORCHESTRA prospective studies have to be compatible with earlier collected information to be efficiently combined. In this article, we describe how we utilized and contributed to existing standard terminologies … Show more

“…Thirdy, the actual implementation of the extension modules should be part of follow-up infrastructure projects to supply funding and resources for filling the dataset definition with actual data. For the GECCO dataset, this is ensured by follow-up projects of the German COVID-19 Research Network of University Medicine ("Netzwerk Universitätsmedizin"), such as CODEX+, which includes several implementation tasks that are actively using the GECCO dataset items [39] and further projects [40][41][42][43]. Fourth, once the dataset definitions are implemented and leveraged in use cases, additional demands to the dataset are likely raised or issues with existing definitions are revealed.…”

“…web applications for real-time recording of symptoms especially in self-isolating patients) can be utilized for a more detailed assessment of clinical questions. A new pan-European project named Connecting European Cohorts to Increase Common and Effective Response to SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic (ORCHESTRA) has been established on similar principles to rapidly advance the knowledge of the effects and treatment of COVID-19 [ 45 ]. Similarly, collaboration with existing platforms specifically designed in anticipation of a pandemic can be established in collecting timely, detailed and well-harmonized data for kidney patients.…”
