Harmonics and Flicker in an Iron and Steel Industry with AC arc furnaces

Abstract: An AC arc furnace is an unbalanced, non-linear and time-varying load, which can cause many power quality problems to the electric network inside the plant and in its electrical vicinity. Although different studies addressing harmonics and flicker analyses on arc furnaces can be found in the bibliography, it is very difficult obtain an exact model that considers all the parameters that influence the process, and therefore it is necessary to obtain actual measurements under different conditions. “…To reduce voltage fluctuations in electrical grids, various types of dynamic compensation for reactive power are traditionally used. Their use, according to experimental data [4], provides a decrease in the short-term dose of flicker from 6.38 % to 3.31 %. The use of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) can reduce the short-term flicker index by a factor of 6, provided that the grid impedance and its changes are properly taken into account [5].…”

“…In-depth research on AC EAF has just been carried out in China and abroad in recent years, and the power supply model, power quality emission characteristics, and governance scheme of AC EAF have gradually become mature [7,8]. However, there is relatively little research on DC EAF, and there is still a lack of necessary understanding of the power quality characteristics and effects of large-capacity DC EAF when they are connected to the grid [9].…”

“…519 [21]. Conventionally, to minimize voltage fluctuation, SVC (static var compensator) combined with TCR (thyristor-controlled reactor) and passive tuned filter, or STATCOM combined with PWM inverter module and high-pass filter is used [2,22]. However, depending on the system conditions, a passive filter can be a sufficient solution.…”
