Drilling fluids are essential operating additives for extracting oil and shale gas. Thus, their pollution control and recycling utilization are significant to petrochemical development. Vacuum distillation technology was used in this research to handle waste oil-based drilling fluids and achieve reutilization. Briefly, recycled oil and recovered solids can be obtained from waste oil-based drilling fluids whose density is 1.24–1.37 g/cm 3 by vacuum distillation under the condition of an external heat transfer oil temperature of 270 ± 5 °C and a reaction pressure below 5 × 10 3 Pa. Meanwhile, recycled oil has excellent apparent viscosity (AV, 21 mPa·s) and plastic viscosity (PV, 14 mPa·s), which could be used as a substitute for 3# white oil. Furthermore, PF-ECOSEAL prepared by recycled solids exhibited better rheological properties (27.5 mPa·s AV, 18.5 mPa·s PV, and 9 Pa yield point) and plugging performance (32 mL V 0 , 1.90 mL/min 1/2 V sf ) than drilling fluids prepared with the conventional plugging agent PF-LPF. Our work confirmed that vacuum distillation is a valid technology in innocuity treatment and resource utilization of drilling fluids and has great value in industrial applications.

Acid-responsive nonaqueous (glycerol in n-decane) Pickering emulsions were prepared using preferentially oil-wetted dynamic covalent silica (SiO 2 −pDB) nanoparticles as the Pickering emulsifiers. The acid-responsive Pickering emulsifier SiO 2 −pDB was prepared based on a Schiff base reaction between amino silica (SiO 2 −NH 2 ) and p-decanoxybenzaldehyde (pDBA). The formation of SiO 2 −pDB was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The preferentially oil-wetted character of SiO 2 −pDB was indicated by contact angle measurement. Stable nonaqueous Pickering emulsions were prepared using preferentially oilwetted SiO 2 −pDB as the Pickering emulsifier. However, after adjusting the nonaqueous Pickering emulsions to an acidic environment, complete phase separation occurred. In the acidic environment, preferentially oil-wetted SiO 2 − pDB decomposed into hydrophilic SiO 2 −NH 2 and hydrophobic pDBA due to the decomposition of the dynamic imine bond in the SiO 2 −pDB. Then, the hydrophilic SiO 2 −NH 2 and hydrophobic pDBA desorbed from the two-phase interface, resulting in complete phase separation of the initially stable nonaqueous Pickering emulsions. The acid-responsive nonaqueous Pickering emulsions show great potential in application in water sensitive systems, such as oil-based drilling fluids.

Oil-Based Mud (OBM) cutting is a by-product generated during oil-well drilling. It is classified as a hazardous material; however, its chemical composition suggests that it might be suitable as a raw material in cement manufacturing. It is rich in calcium oxide, silica, and aluminium oxide, which are the major oxides in raw materials for cement manufacturing. In this research, OBM cutting is used as a constituent of the raw meal for cement clinker production. Raw meal mixtures were prepared by mixing different ratios of raw materials increasing OBM content. The impact of the addition of OBM cutting on the resulting clinker has been investigated. The results demonstrate that OBM cutting could be recycled in the manufacturing of Portland cement clinker. Clinker prepared using OBM cutting had very similar properties to that prepared from limestone. This result could represent an opportunity for solving an environmental problem. The addition of OBM cutting lowers the calcination temperature, and increases the rate of carbonate dissociation. However, it also leads to a higher free lime content in the resulting clinker, which is a result of the presence of trace elements, such as barium. Overall, its use as a raw material in cement production could provide a cost-effective, environment-friendly route for the management of OBM cutting.
