Harmful algal blooms along the North American west coast region: History, trends, causes, and impacts

Abstract: A B S T R A C TAlong the Pacific coast of North America, from Alaska to Mexico, harmful algal blooms (HABs) have caused losses to natural resources and coastal economies, and have resulted in human sicknesses and deaths for decades. Recent reports indicate a possible increase in their prevalence and impacts of these events on living resources over the last 10-15 years. Two types of HABs pose the most significant threat to coastal ecosystems in this ''west coast'' region: dinoflagellates of the genera Alexandri… Show more

“…Maximum DA in CA mussel tissue is higher (610 ppm) than in OR or WA razor clams (295 ppm) (19), and DA has exceeded 20 ppm in CA shellfish and other seafood species (sardines, anchovies) (19) nearly every year since 2000. Documented cases of DA in marine birds and mammals predominantly occur in CA (17).…”

“…Yet, human-induced eutrophication has been reported in Europe and elsewhere since the early 20 th century (de Jonge et al, 2002;Lewitus et al, 2012;May et al, 2012). The lack of historical data makes establishing reference conditions for surface waters, especially in and downstream of well-populated areas, very difficult.…”
