Hardness and Wear Properties of Al-TiN Coatings Produced by DC Sputtering

Abstract: Aluminum is a lightweight material that is commonly used in engine components. However, aluminum's low hardness and wear resistance, requires special treatment before being used as a component. Increasing the hardness and wear resistance of aluminum can be done by coating Titanium Nitride (TiN) with the sputtering method. In this study, the effect of sputtering time on Al-TiN coating on hardness and wear resistance was obtained. The deposition of titanium nitride thin films on aluminum using a gas ratio of Ar:… Show more

“…One of the PVD coating methods that can be used for the development of this aluminum alloy is DC sputtering [11]- [13]. Sputtering is one of the thin film formation techniques that is most widely used, for example in several industrial products such as semiconductors and surface layers [14] [15].…”

“…In this study, the selected material to be coated is Tungsten Nitride, with the consideration that the WN coating has very superior properties, namely having hardness, wear resistance, abrasion resistance, and very high corrosion resistance and is inert [14][15][16]. The coating method applied in this research is the home-made D-C sputtering technique [17][18][19][20][21][22]. In this method, the sputter gas is argon (Ar), the reactive gas is nitrogen (N2), while the sputtering target is pure tungsten (W) with a diameter of 5 cm and a thickness of 3 mm.…”
