“…In many diseases the distribution of haptoglobin types and/or blood groups has been found to accord with those in normal individ uals [2,5,7,8,10,23], and Ikkala [14] confirmed the normality of blood group distribution in haemophilics. In the present investigation no statistically significant difference was found between the hapto globin phenotypes of haemophilics and of normal individuals.…”

“…Type 0-0 individuals are those who show no haemoglobin-binding protein, but show free haemoglo bin in the starch-gel. Because of the belief that there are two controlling allelic genes for each haptoglobin type and in order to compare the results statis tically with previously reported studies [7,18], individuals with ahaptoglobinaemia (type 0-0) were excluded in calculating the gene frequencies. Expected values for various haptoglobin phenotypes have therefore been calculated on the basis of the Hardy-Weinberg equation (type 1-1 = p2, type 2-1 = 2pq and type 2-2 = q2 where p = Hp1 gene frequency and q = Hp2 gene frequency).…”

“…No clear cut relationship has yet bern found between haptoglobin types, transfcrrin typcs and specific clinical disordcrs; pcrhaps, however, as Allison [1] poinLs out, due to the relativcly small number of individuals so far trsted it would only have shown up had the correlation been high. Reports on such associations have been controversial [7,8,18,271 and it has bern recommrnded that work on this matter should be cxtrndcd [13].…”
