Haptic Interaction Design for Everyday Interfaces

Abstract: This chapter sets about to provide the background and orientation needed to set a novice designer on his or her way to bringing haptics successfully into an interactive product. To define appropriate roles for haptic interaction, it is necessary to integrate a basic awareness of human capabilities on one hand and current device technology on the other. Here, I explore this integration by first summarizing the most salient constraints imposed by both humans and hardware. I then proceed to relate perceptual, mot… Show more

“…Richer feedback-more perceivable dimensions, dynamic range, and fine control-impact quantity and clarity of information. Summaries of recent progress, as well as specification of what is needed, can be found in [25], [26], [34], [40], and [42], but for now, the palette is restricted.…”

“…In the burgeoning mobile application area, there is recent hardware innovation [32], [35], [44], [46]. However, requirements abound: needs for access to delivery sites with adequate tactile sensitivity, for timely or even continuous physical contact, for portable and powerefficient designs, and for rich high-dynamic-range signals [20] are inadequately served by current tactile display technology and interaction paradigms [40], [42].…”

“…However, physical interaction/operation and a strong sense of immersion remains deficient to date. In fact, humans heavily count on haptic interaction with the environment in our daily life [1]. With the development of 5G in mobile and wireless networking, and the promises of higher data rate and closeto-zero latency (ultra-low latency) in communications, there are stronger motivations than in the past to complement the audio and video communication with other human senses and deliver a fully immersive experience remotely.…”
