Haptic-Enabled Handheld Mobile Robots

Abstract: The Cellulo robots are small tangible robots that are designed to represent virtual interactive point-like objects that reside on a plane within carefully designed learning activities. In the context of these activities, our robots not only display autonomous motion and act as tangible interfaces, but are also usable as haptic devices in order to exploit, for instance, kinesthetic learning. In this article, we present the design and analysis of the haptic interaction module of the Cellulo robots. We first deta… Show more

“…Haptic feedback has two significant characteristics that are useful for developing the skills needed for learning geometry and handwriting [29,32,39]. In essence, 1) they allow the user to feel the shape and spatial characteristics of the drawing (the grapheme), and 2) they can be used to guide the hand during the drawing activity (the ductus).…”

“…Our robots are low-cost, palm-sized tangible mobile robots, capable of holonomic motion, haptic feedback (see [31] for details) and absolute 3DOF global localization while on the printed paper sheets. 6 capacitive touch buttons individually illuminated with full RGB colors on the top surface provides simple visual output and touch input.…”
