The correlation between learning and teaching technologies is multidimensional and complex, thus, the digital tools that can help students turning information into knowledge define the crucial role of pedagogical practice. Open access to hardware and software tools is a focal point for advancing learning. In sciences, lab-based experiments constitute a vital part of curricula that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Access to remote lab tools is possible by pairing simulators, emulators and actual equipment, located in various geographical locations. Under this premise, Education 4.0 defines a new learning framework aligned with the fourth industrial revolution digital requirements. These constitute smart sensors, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics. In this context, University graduates need to prepare themselves with complex problem solving and interdisciplinary problems. To this end, contemporary Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teaching practices should be present along the way. Digitally competent students need to learn from a modern and adjustable curriculum tailored to cover necessary skills related to Internet of Things (IoT). Therefore, the digitization of University campuses, including smart IoT, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Fifth Generation (5G) automation infrastructures is necessary. In this work, we carry out an extensive STEM oriented survey which highlights and categorizes all contemporary digital tools and technologies needed to support future graduates. Moreover, we focus on contemporary pedagogical and didactic approaches to support Education 4.0 skills. We match contemporary methods with lab types, expected learning outcomes and open software and hardware tools, as imposed by the Education 4.0 framework. Our scenarios mainly focus on University education and consider smart sensors, IoT, 5G technologies, which are the basic building components for students' digital competencies to meet Education 4.0 requirements.

The future of networking will be driven by the current emerging trends of combining the physical and virtual realities in cyberspace. Considering the ambient pandemic challenges, the role of virtual and augmented reality will definitely grow over time by transforming into the paradigm of the Metaverse of Things, where each person, thing or other entity will simultaneously exist within multiple synchronized realities. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for future metaverse applications composed of multiple synchronized data flows from multiple operators through multiple wearable devices and with different quality requirements. A new service quality model is proposed based on a customizable utility function for each individual data flow. The proposed approach is based on dynamic fine-grained data flow allocation and service selection using non-fungible tokens, which can be traded over the blockchain among users and operators in a decentralized mobile network environment.

The booming haptic data significantly improve the users’ immersion during multimedia interaction. As a result, the study of a Haptic-based Interaction System has attracted the attention of the multimedia community. To construct such a system, a challenging task is the synchronization of multiple sensorial signals that is critical to the user experience. Despite audio-visual synchronization efforts, there is still a lack of a haptic-aware multimedia synchronization model. In this work, we propose a timestamp-independent synchronization for haptic–visual signal transmission. First, we exploit the sequential correlations during delivery and playback of a haptic–visual communication system. Second, we develop a key sample extraction of haptic signals based on the force feedback characteristics and a key frame extraction of visual signals based on deep-object detection. Third, we combine the key samples and frames to synchronize the corresponding haptic–visual signals. Without timestamps in the signal flow, the proposed method is still effective and more robust in complicated network conditions. Subjective evaluation also shows a significant improvement of user experience with the proposed method.
