Haptic communication optimises joint decisions and affords implicit confidence sharing

Abstract: Group decisions can outperform the choices of the best individual group members. Previous research suggested that optimal group decisions require individuals to communicate explicitly (e.g., verbally) their confidence levels. Our study addresses the untested hypothesis that implicit communication using a sensorimotor channel—haptic coupling—may afford optimal group decisions, too. We report that haptically coupled dyads solve a perceptual discrimination task more accurately than their best individual members; … Show more

“…A recent study by Pezzulo, Roche, and Saint‐Bauzel (2021) demonstrated that subjective confidence can be implicitly inferred from the force applied during motor actions such that pushing harder toward one of the two response options implies high confidence. This finding is in line with the idea that the confidence of other individuals can be implicitly inferred from other behavioral cues instead of explicit confidence reports, which is also consistent with the findings obtained in the current study.…”

“…This decoupling is very difficult to achieve in a walking task, but has been done in upper-limb studies with virtual objects that either isolated force feedback from the object vs . the partner ( Groten et al, 2013 ; Roche and Saint-Bauzel, 2016 ) or used physical interaction to negotiate a joint non-motor decision ( Pezzulo et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Much of the literature we have reviewed here focuses on visual perception. However, many joint actions involve coordination through auditory (D'Ausilio et al, 2015) and haptic (Pezzulo et al, 2021;van der Wel et al, 2011) information. How perception in different sensory modalities contributes to social interaction, and how information is integrated across different modalities in the service of social interaction, remain important questions for future research.…”
