Hapten-specific T cell responses to 4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl acetyl. XI. Pseudogenetic restrictions of hybridoma suppressor factors

Abstract: Suppressor factor derived from three different murine T cell hybridomas were characterized . They specifically inhibited 4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl acetyl cutaneous sensitivity responses. The factors bind antigen and bear I-J and idiotypic determinants, but lack conventional immunoglobulin constant-region determinants. The factors function during the induction phase of the immune response, by inducing a second population of suppressor cells (Ts(e)). Suppressor factor can inhibit both cellular and plaque-forming c… Show more

“…In several independent systems, I-J (or I-C) restrictions have been observed on the interactions of suppressor T cells (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). In most systems, the Ts cells are stimulated by antigen priming.…”

“…There are descriptions of suppressor cells acting at the afferent and efferent stages of contact and delayed hypersensitivity response; haptens [ [18,19] have described the Tsl-Ts3 system. They believe that the Tsl induces the Ts2, then activates the Ts3 (which arises by an independent mode of immunization).…”

“…Such cells could serve to juxtapose the TsF2 with the Ts3 cells, thereby permitting the interactions required for Ts~ activation. Furthermore, since suppressor cell interactions can occur in the absence of an external source of antigen (13,25), the Igh restriction may reflect an antiidiotypic internal image (which substitutes for antigen). This hypothesis further suggests that such a system of internal images is in some fashion controlled by genes linked to the Igh complex.…”
