“…Before contemporary neuroimaging, invasive procedures like cerebral arteriography and pneumoencephalography could show a two-dimensional view of where certain vascular pathologies may be seen or an outline of the ventricular system or even a tumor, but no direct view of the brain was possible (Bigler, 2017). Neuropsychologists like Hans-Lukas Teuber (see Bigler, 2009), who studied World War II and Korean War traumatic brain injury (TBI) victims, used standard skull X-ray films of soldiers with through-and-through penetrating wounds that could be visualized in the X-ray to differentiate anterior versus posterior lesion effects on certain neuropsychological functions, but again the technique provided no direct view of the brain or its pathways. “…To achieve the initial goals of characterizing the neurocognitive and neurobehavioral correlates of the brain when damaged, neuropsychology emerged mid-20th century in an era where non-invasive neuroimaging did not exist. Out of necessity, the founders of this field had to be creative in terms of natural observation and capitalized on coarse measures of brain damage, like aphasia, hemiplegia or hemisensory deficits from TBI and other disorders (i.e., stroke, neoplasm) to standardize certain neuropsychological measures (see Bigler, 2009 ).
